California Poised To Penalize Waiters In The Name Of The Environment
California Targets Waitstaff In The Name Of The Environment.
Waiter and Waitresses make very little hourly as their pay is largely based on the service they provide, as well as the generosity of the patrons. During slow times they will really feel it in their paychecks. Now California is in the process of introducing a new ordinance that could potentially cost the wait staff up to $1000.
So what is this offense that waiter and waitresses are doing that is so heinous. The new ordinance would penalize any server that gives a customer a straw without being asked. So now a common courtesy is considered fine worthy?
“We need to create awareness around the issue of one-time use plastic straws and its detrimental effects on our landfills, waterways, and oceans,” Calderon, majority leader of California’s lower house, said in a statement.”
“The bill would tack the rule onto an already existing code, the violation of which carries a fine between $25 and $1,000, up to six months in county jail or both, “except as otherwise provided.” It would only apply to sit-down restaurants, not bars or fast food locations.”

The ordinance which was introduced back in January is on its way to being voted on. What’s concerning is that some people don’t seem to care.
“To be fair, it doesn’t ban straws entirely, it just bans waiters from offering straws to customers who have not asked for them — so it’s not like Calderon is being totally ridiculous,” Katherine Timpf wrote in National Review back in January.
While others understood the ridiculous nature of the ordinance and recently commented on it.
“Former Ronald Reagan speechwriter Peggy Grande mocked the proposed law, noting that “the most ridiculous and egregious example of overreach, the state legislature says it will arrest any waiter who gives a customer a plastic straw if they don’t ask for one.
“With all the problems in our state, I don’t think that jailing unsolicited straw distributors in restaurants should be a top priority,” she dryly added.”
She has a point, with all of the many poor choices that the politicians make in California, is this ordinance even worth putting through? Only California could find a way to penalize hardworking Americans for being courteous.
