1st Grader Arrested For Throwing A Tantrum?
A little girl is being charged with battery for kicking a staff member. The Student, Kaia, was sent to the office because she was throwing a tantrum, once there a staff member grabbed her wrist in an attempt to calm her down, she kicked the staff member. So she was arrested. I’d rather have the schools go back to spanking the child…
“The girl’s grandmother, Meralyn Kirkland, said the girl suffers from sleep apnea and was sleep deprived when she threw the tantrum, and shouldn’t have been arrested. She told NBC affiliate WFLA-TV that she was told of the arrest after the fact.
“What do you mean she was arrested, he said ‘there was an incident and she kicked somebody and she is being charged and she is on her way,’” Kirkland told the outlet.
She said police officers were not persuaded by her granddaughter’s medical condition.
“She has a medical condition that we are working on getting resolved and he says, ‘what medical condition, she has a sleep disorder, sleep apnea,’ and he says, ‘well I have sleep apnea and I don’t behave like that,” Kirkland told WFLA.
“They told us we had to wait a few minutes because Kaia was being fingerprinted, and when she said fingerprinted it hit me like a ton of bricks,” Kirkland told WFLA. “No six-year-old child should be able to tell somebody that they had handcuffs on them and they were riding in the back of a police car and taken to a juvenile center to be fingerprinted, mug shot.”
“Orlando Police Department officials said Rolle was one of two children Turner arrested that day, the other was 8 years old. Per department policy, officers are required to seek approval from their watch commander before arresting anyone under 12, but according to Sgt. David Baker, Turner didn’t do that.
An internal investigation into the arrests is ongoing.
While Kirkland now has to deal with the repercussions of the arrest, including an upcoming court date, she hopes no child has to experience what her granddaughter went through.”
This seems a bit extreme on the school’s part. Yes, the child was in the wrong, but arrest her? She is all of six and this is the time where she is supposed to be learning right from wrong. She was clearly upset and may have some anger issues. She needs a stern conversation and to be reprimanded. But she should be punished with detention or even suspension, not a ride down to the station. Hopefully, they overturn it as this is definitely uncalled for. Kids are stupid, and as young as she is, she deserves some leniency.
