California Neighborhood Comes Together To Fight Human Waste

California is still being plagued by poop-filled streets. The homeless population remains to be a huge problem. It appears that California leaders are finally doing something as they are sending a crew out to clean up the waste once a month, but in some areas that just isn’t enough and is more like putting a bandaid on a gaping wound. But one San Francisco neighborhood is taking action as they have a high homeless population and know that once a month is not going to cut it.

San Francisco’s Tenderloin District kicked off a new privately funded program Tuesday to increase the number of times its sidewalks are blasted with industrial-grade pressure washers from once a month to once a week following complaints of large amounts of human and animal feces littering the streets.

The Tenderloin Community Benefit District, which is a non-profit neighborhood group, secured an additional $260,000 this year to essentially quadruple the number of times the neighborhood’s sidewalks are professionally cleaned a month, according to the program’s supervisor Matt Haney. Property owners within the district’s 30 square blocks helped fund the program as the neighborhood continues to be plagued by a large homeless population, San Francisco’s KPIX-TV reported.”

Tenderloin, which, according to the San Francisco “poop map,” is “ground zero” for the city’s waste problem, with dozens of reports of human feces littering the sidewalk being called into the city’s 311 non-emergency hotline every month, and despite San Francisco’s reported overtime commitment to keep the streets feces-free, the city’s “poop patrol” cleanup unit is only able to thoroughly wash the Tenderloin’s public sidewalks around once per month because demand is so high.

The new program, the Tenderloin hopes, will increase power washings to at least once per week.

The program won’t supplant the city’s “poop patrol” efforts, run by the San Francisco Department of Public Works. But that group can only wash the sidewalks with industrial-grade equipment once per month. Otherwise, the “poop patrol” hoses down the sidewalks with fire hoses and steam cleaners once per day.”

It’s amazing that we are talking about a place within the United States. We are one of the richest countries in the world and we have a liberal run state where some cities have human waste littering the sidewalks and streets. Why is this still a problem? It has been over a year and Californians are now having to pool money to fix a problem that their local government should have handled by now. Well, I guess this is what they get for voting blue.
