Even Dems Are Questioning O’Rourke’s Gun Confiscation Plan
Beto O’Rourke seems to think that Americans can not be trusted with guns. He said as much when he started pushing his anti-gun Mandatory Buyback plan. But it turns out that his extreme gun control plan is not widely accepted even among his own party.
“Rep. Vicente González (D-TX) admitted on Monday that while he supports a host of strict gun control reforms, he does not know if Democratic presidential candidate Beto O’Rourke’s calls for a federally mandated gun seizure program will help to prevent future mass shootings.
“If you think back in the ’70s and ’80s, many of these guns were as available as they are now, but we weren’t having these mass shootings that we have today,” González told CNN host Poppy Harlow. “So, I think we really need to ask ourselves a question of what has socially brought us to this point in history and what have we done and what can we do differently to change society.”
“That’s certainly a question that needs to be continued to ask because I don’t know that taking everyone’s guns and buying everyone’s guns back is going to cure the national massacres that we’ve had in recent history.”
“…The plan would require millions of law-abiding American citizens to hand over their firearms to the government.”
“The number of AR-15 and AK-47s in the US is estimated at a staggering 16 million, creating logistical challenges to take them out of circulation. Many gun owners are also unwilling to turn over the weapons and if the government offered to buy them all back at face value, the price tag could easily run into the billions of dollars.
O’Rourke’s pointed declaration during a recent debate — “Hell yes, we’re gonna take your AR-15, your AK-47” — stoked longstanding fears among gun owners that Democrats are less interested in safety or finding a middle ground and just want to confiscate guns. Even some gun-control advocates aren’t so sure that confiscating firearms will work.
“In some regards, this horse is out of the barn,” said David Chipman, a retired agent with the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and now the senior policy adviser for the Giffords group. “For years we’ve allowed these to be sold.”
O’Rourke is ridiculous to think that lawful citizens are going to be on board with his extreme stance. Why punish law-abiding citizens when it is the mentally disturbed or criminals that are causing these tragedies?
