Illinois Town Officials Find Out Just How Inclusive The Left Is During Diversity Debate
Chicago suburb Oak Park Village has been trying to update its diversity statement. It has not been properly updated since the ’70s, although amended in 2017. Earlier this month the Oak Park Village Board met to discuss possible alteration to the statement and found that apparently white men get a lesser voice in this board’s version of diversity.
“Months of work in creating an updated diversity statement for Oak Park came to a head at the Oct. 7 village board meeting, which included a heated debate and ended with unanimous approval of the document.
Trustee Deno Andrews said he liked the wording of “99 percent” of the statement, but sought to include a definition after the words “systems of oppression” in the statement’s second paragraph. He said the wording of the definition came from information provided by the village’s community relations commission, which helped write the statement.
“These are, in many cases, new language that many people in the village don’t know,” Andrews said. “I feel strongly we should clarify what that means.”
Andrews proposed a change which included adding the terms “racism, sexism, homophobia, xenophobia and all other forms of bias and hate” following the words “systems of oppression.”
Trustee Dan Moroney began to engage Andrews in a discussion about the change, which led trustee Susan Buchanan to address both of her fellow trustees.
“I’m so tired of hearing two white men telling us what systems of oppression are,” Buchanan said. “No, you don’t know what systems of oppression are. This is like if you guys wanted to tell us what it was like to have a menstrual cycle. You don’t know what you’re talking about,” she added, at some points hitting the table with her hand and pointing a finger at the male trustees.
“You have not spent a day with dark brown skin and tried to walk through this society from birth. We have a chance to make history. It’s time for this community to face equity.”
So because they are white males they don’t get a say? Oo all this inclusive behavior is just so welcoming…
