Justice Roberts Let Them Know: SCOTUS Will Not Be Part Of The Kavanaugh Smear
Chief Justice Roberts spoke at the University of Minnesota Tuesday, where many people were ready to jump at him with questions in regards to the Kavanaugh controversy. Roberts addressed the concerns of the audience and the public when he discussed how he was going to maintain the traditions of the court. The Chief Justice wasted no time as he explained that the court is not a place for politics.
“The contentious events in Washington of recent weeks” and emphasized the court’s independence from the executive and legislative branches. “I will not criticize the political branches. We do that often enough in our opinions. But what I would like to do, briefly, is emphasize how the judicial branch is — how it must be — very different.”
Roberts spoke of how the Supreme Court was a place of traditions. He gave an example of how before the Justices hear a case they all the greet each other and wish each other well in the upcoming case by shaking hands.
“Those of us on the court know that the best way to do our job is to work together in a collegial way,” Roberts said at the University of Minnesota Law School. “I am not talking about mere civility, although that helps. I am instead talking about a shared commitment to a genuine exchange of ideas and views through each step of the decision process. We need to know at each step that we are in this together.”
“It’s a small thing, perhaps, but it is a repeated reminder that, as our newest colleague put it, we do not sit on opposite sides of an aisle, we do not caucus in separate rooms, we do not serve one party or one interest, we serve one nation.”
But most importantly he said: “We do not speak for the people, but we speak for the Constitution.”

The Supreme Court should only be dealing with things related to the constitution. It’s all of the social issues that they have been dealing with that has really changed the dynamic of the courts. Elected Officials should be where American citizens turn to when it comes to changing the way a state or country is run. Not The Supreme Court.
