Ohio Parent Becomes Unhinged Over Fundraising Raffle Prize
An Ohio mom was outraged after she found that a fundraiser her cheerleading daughter was taking part in was raffling off an AM-15. She immediately raised a fuss and contacted the president of the football league.
“This is absurd, you’re having elementary kids sell your AR-15. Why?” Chilton said. “I highly doubt that something would happen with the gun, but say it did. Say one of the kids in the high school got a hold of it — got the AR-15 or AM-15 and shot up a school with it, and I’m the one that sold the raffle ticket to his dad?”
Chilton said in July she received an email saying that all the members of the cheer team would be required to sell five AM-15 raffle tickets and five gift basket raffle tickets for $10 each to help raise money for the football and cheer programs.
“I can’t see them selling some type of semi-automatic rifle when we have all these mass shootings going on, going door to door,” she said.
She said she took her concerns to Robert Wooten, president of New Richmond Junior Lions Football Inc.”
“Wooten said that he only received complaints about the raffle this year, and that the program has used the same or similar fundraisers over the past four years that have all rendered very effective fundraising results.
“We are compassionate [on] where people may be on the gun issue,” Wooten reasoned. “This was not a way for us to promote gun violence or incite violence. We are going to reevaluate this next year.”
Wooten also addressed Chilton’s claims that families would be billed $100 fees for passing on the fundraising program.
“We’re not going to send them a bill,” he said, insisting that the fundraiser is optional. “We don’t operate that way.”
Despite criticism from league parents, Wooten said the guns “sold like hotcakes.”
The gun doesn’t go to the kids. It is just a prize that encourages people to donate. In fact, the winner has to get a background check before receiving the gun. She seems to be going overboard about this especially when none of the kids will have to be anywhere near a gun. Sports teams need funding, especially in poorer areas. I feel sorry for her daughter as it seems the rest of the kids were fine with this.
