Transgender Weightlifter Speaks Out After Being Stripped Of World Record Titles
Mary Gregory was doing great she broke a whole bunch of records in the female weightlifting field. But days later she was stripped of all her titles after the judges found out that Gregory was actually a male who identified as a female.
“When Mary Gregory filled out the registration form to compete in a local weightlifting event, she checked the box that read “female” without hesitation.
“I mean, that’s my gender,” she said. “I didn’t even think about it. That’s who I am.”
But the Judges did not agree as their standards were not based on social trends and the current identity politics. When they said female they meant naturally born female.
“She put down female. Clearly, she’s not a female,” said Paul Bossi, 100% Raw Powerlifting Federation’s president. “Not biologically anyways. In our rules, we go by biological,” he said. “According to the rules, she can only lift in the men’s division. … I’m not trying to hurt anyone’s feelings but I have to follow the rules. We could’ve rectified a lot of this prior had we known,” Bossi said. “In a way, we felt like we were duped.”
Gregory was feels discriminated against.
“I felt like they were invalidating my gender and my identity,” said Gregory, who began hormone replacement treatment a year ago and feels she should be allowed to compete alongside any other female.
“Too much emphasis is put on testosterone,” she said. “There are so many other factors that determine how much you lift: biomechanics, better leverages, joints, lengths of bones — where do we stop and draw the line? — socioeconomics and access to nutrition and coaching and gyms.”
Paul Bossi is trying to remedy the situation and is planning to create a transgender category. But Gregory is not happy about this development.
“Because it segregates us,” she said. “I think it’s discrimination. It’s not that different than having a category for tall people or for African Americans or for Hispanics.”

Yay, it’s Friday!!! I didn’t pass out today!!! And I misloaded the bar, lol. – Was actually very anxious going into these pulls. Despite my attempts to blow it off passing out at 55lbs below your PR pull is NOT cool! I actually released my valsava at the top today and viola, no passing out! Took a quick breath and reset as tight as could for the trip down. Will have to work on this next training block, imo releasing tension/ valsava mid rep isn’t not optimal but it worked! – The cherry on top is I meant to load 177.5kg and actually loaded 182ish! My confidence really needed this today! @savvysavit @richmondbalance804 #transrightsarehumanrights?#sharetheplatform#powerliftingwomen#sumoischeating#exodusstrength#upliftandliftheavy
Bossi is not alone in thinking that a transwoman should not be competing against naturally born women.
Sharron Davies, a retired Olympic swimmer from England, said that “woman with female biology cannot compete” against a “male body with male physiology.”
“Socially I’m for everyone living the way they wish, safely, not harming others but sport is ALL about biology not ideology,” she tweeted.
The judges made the right call. Gregory is clearly at an advantage. Gregory should never have thought that this was fair for him to compete against women. He should have realized it real quick when started breaking world records.
