Woman Feels Fat-Shamed At Harry Potter Theme Park
Amusement Parks bring joy and excitement to many. Universal Studios put together a Theme Park that brings guests to Hogwarts and other Harry Potter inspired places. The idea is to lure fans of Harry Potter and give them a unique chance to spend time in one of their favorite book settings. But one park goer had a different experience. Instead of enjoying herself, Jana Schmiedling found herself disheartened and excluded.
Jana Schmiedling is a plus size woman but she did not allow a thing like weight get in her way. She initially had a great time at the Harry Potter Theme Park.
“As it was my first time at Universal Studios, I couldn’t have possibly been more tickled to drink butterbeer and visit all of the Hogsmeade shops. I even purchased a $50 wand that I used on all of the goofy little spell spots around the delightful town square. I was a child again, grinning ear to ear the entire time, posting massive numbers of Instagram stories so that all of my friends knew I was finally livin’ that Harry Potter LYFE!”
But things took a turn for the worse when Jana decided to go on a ride, Harry Potter, and the Forbidden Journey. Jana had heard that there might be a problem, as the ride had restrictive safety features. But she still gave it a go as she wanted to experience the ride that one reviewer claimed was: “an experience that you will never forget! Thrilling, scary, and fun, you cannot leave without taking this for a spin! A ride this good makes Disney’s top attractions look pathetic!”
Jana joined the line and thought she had made it on, only to be escorted over to model seats to test her ability to use the safety harness. If she were able to click the restraints three times she could go on the ride, otherwise, she would have to skip this one due to safety. She was only able to get one click.
“I took the bullet and pulled the restraint over my shoulders, pressing down as tightly as I could, my precious E-cups getting smashed into my chest and up around my neck. One click. That’s all I could manage.”
The News Reel From 2010 When Universal Made Changes.
Jana was humiliated by the experience. But she at least had a heads up or she might have really let it get to her. But is Universal to blame? Should they be more accommodating?
“While there are no height or weight maximums for Forbidden Journey, the safety restraints must be able to close properly in order for guests to ride, Universal officials said.”
It is a liability for Universal if they allow anyone to ride their rides without the safety harness and in the atmosphere of sue happy people they have to watch themselves. As it is Universal Orlando modified their seats to try and better accommodate plus size park guests back in 2010.
As obesity is a growing problem in America, should Universal step up their accommodations? Or is this just catering to the few as opposed to the average guest?
