Despite having a slight drop in financing over the past weekend it looks like Planned Parenthood closed 2018 after having one of their better years. Not in the way liberals claim either. The facility actually provided less health-related services last year but more abortions than previous years.
The new report indicates that Planned Parenthood’s provision of abortion increased by more than 11,000 last year, from 321,348 in 2016–17 to 332,757 this past year. That’s also the highest number of abortions that Planned Parenthood clinics have performed in any year since 2011–12.
Judging by the most recent numbers available from the Centers for Disease Control, which collects data on abortion rates from every state that chooses to report its statistics, and the Guttmacher Institute, which estimates annual abortions for the entire U.S., this is likely one-third to one-half of all the abortions performed in the U.S.
The report added that the number of non-abortion services provided at Planned Parenthood clinics decreased in nearly every major category during the 2017–18 fiscal year. Planned Parenthood’s provision of contraception decreased by 80,000, cancer screenings by 45,000, and other “women’s health services” such as well-woman exams and prenatal services decreased by 13,000. The only category of services that significantly increased, other than abortion procedures, was tests and treatment for sexually transmitted diseases, which went up by 300,000.
According to The Daily Wire, Planned Parenthood president Leanna Wen recently broke with tradition set by Cecile Richards and other previous Planned Parenthood presidents by suggesting in an interview that Planned Parenthood views abortion services as its “core mission,” to the detriment of the other “women’s health” services it provides.
“Our core mission is providing, protecting and expanding access to abortion and reproductive health care,” Wen tweeted. “We will never back down from that fight – it’s a fundamental human right and women’s lives are at stake.”
She was responding to a Buzzfeed post that makes the oft-repeated comment that abortion is only 3.4% of Planned Parenthoods provided services, insisting that while the procedure is only a small fraction of Planned Parenthood’s work, it represents the very heart and soul of Planned Parenthood’s directive as a business.
That 3.4% figure is also unreliable, as DeSanctis points out in her piece, even based on the new numbers. Planned Parenthood counts each individual test, screen, or patient encounter as a single service, giving it a grand total of more than 9 million separate “services” provided between 2017 and 2018. But Planned Parenthood only had around 2.7 million individual clients, meaning each client received multiple services.
That’s a staggering average. This means that roughly one in every eight women that visited Planned Parent Hood received an abortion last year.
