The outspoken anti-Trump former NSA contractor charged with leaking files and sensitive information now seeks a pardon from the very President she despises. This is becoming a pattern…
Mind you, this is the same person who wrote in her journal that she wanted to burn the White House down and reportedly stated several times how she hated America. She now says that her sentence was ‘not fair’.
Reality Winner told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Friday that she will seek clemency from President Donald Trump, in light of his tweet last week that her sentence of five years and three months in federal prison is “so unfair.”
Winner said her legal team is working on an application strategy and plans to make the request after the midterm elections. If approved, she would avoid her record-setting sentence for leaking a top-secret document on Russian meddling on an online news outlet.
Three days before the 2016 elections, Winner joked with her sister that Russia medaling could have an upside for her passion in weightlifting. “When we become the United States of the Russian Federation,” she said on Facebook, “Olympic lifting will be the national sport.”
Winner, who was working for the defense contractor Pluribus International Corporation, printed an NSA document detailing how Russia had hacked a voting equipment vendor in Florida and was trying to breach local election systems right up until the days before November’s vote.
While researching this story I discovered a Change.org petition to urge Trump to grant Winner clemency. While the message from her mother, as a parent, is heartbreaking, we have also witnessed several people leaking classified information just walk. At some point, a line has to be drawn.
“I’m calling on President Donald Trump to Pardon Reality Winner. If President Donald Trump can pardon the controversial former Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio, with all of his illegal activities and disregard for the law. He can surely give Reality Winner another chance at freedom,” Ryan Gulliory who started the petition stated.
“A message from Reality Winner mother, Billy Winner-Davis”:
”I beg for support for my daughter Reality Winner. She deserves a pardon and to be free. Reality is a patriot and veteran who has served her country and community. She is so passionate and caring and gives freely of herself to others. Her imprisonment and charge of Espionage is so unjust. I pray that we can have this overturned.”
According to The New York Times, Winner, a former Air Force linguist who was the first person prosecuted by the Trump administration on charges of leaking classified information, pleaded guilty this June as part of an agreement with prosecutors that calls for a sentence of 63 months in prison.
Ms. Winner, who is now 26, has been jailed since her arrest and wore an orange prison jumpsuit and white sneakers to the hearing. Her decision to plead guilty to one felony count allows the government both to avoid a complex trial that had been scheduled for October and to notch a victory in the Trump administration’s aggressive pursuit of leakers.
