Graham Backs Trump And Proposes Legislation To End Birthright Citizenship

Illegal immigration is hot button topic as Democrats seem to want to open our borders to anyone while Republicans are for a safer vetting process.  President Trump recently proposed shutting down one of the loopholes that many illegals use to gain passage into the US. He came out against Birthright citizenship. The Democrats were, of course, angry and surprisingly some Republicans turned their back on Trump. But there were some who stood by Trump once again proving to be loyal to the administration. Senator Lindsey Graham came out as a strong advocate of Trump’s idea.

Trump claimed that he was going to use an executive order if need to be to put an end to the loophole.

“It was always told to me that you needed a constitutional amendment. Guess what? You don’t,” Trump said. “You can definitely do it with an Act of Congress. But now they’re saying I can do it just with an executive order.”

Many feel that Trump can not just use an executive order to modify this amendment. They believe it is violation of the 14th amendment. Graham saw this and remedied the situation to the best of his abilities. If Trump can’t fix it he would at put forth the legislation to try and get it done the traditional way through Congress.

He posted his intention on Twitter.

Finally, a president willing to take on this absurd policy of birthright citizenship. I’ve always supported comprehensive immigration reform — and at the same time — the elimination of birthright citizenship.”

The United States is one of two developed countries in the world who grant citizenship based on location of birth. This policy is a magnet for illegal immigration, out of the mainstream of the developed world, and needs to come to an end.”

In addition, I plan to introduce legislation along the same lines as the proposed executive order from President .”

Graham would need to get the support of 2/3 of Congress in order to pass the legislation. He plans to bring it to Congress after the October break.

Even if he is not able to pass it at least they are making an effort to reform the current immigration policy. The border wall is great. But it would be even better if we could find a way to encourage immigrants to legally come into our country and obtain citizenship. It would be less stress on our country and better for everyone involved.
