Our PC culture is getting to be ridiculous. A Transgender woman, Rachel McKinnon, recently won the women’s world championship of cycling and the bronze winner, Jen Wagner, is calling foul. Wagner claims that a transwoman should not be competing against biological women. At least not without leveling the playing field. Which is causing many people to take sides on the issue of transgender and women sports.
“For clarity – this was the WOMEN’S world championships. I repeat. Women’s. Congratulations to the brave faces of silver & bronze. The world is gripped by a febrile madness.”
Wagner commented that she was in third place and that “It was definitely NOT fair.”
The silver medalist from the Netherlands, Carolien van Herrikhuyzen, saw this and surprisingly disagreed.
“No one is a transgender to steal anyone’s medal,” van Herrikhuyzen wrote. “We had an honest race under UCI rules. If you compete you accept the rules, otherwise, don’t compete. I can only imagine what she had to go through in her life to be where she is now, how hard it is to fit in.”
Wagner replied to her comment upset about the situation.
“Just because it’s a CURRENT UCI rule doesn’t mean it[‘s] fair or right. And rules can be changed.”
After the public outcry on Twitter Wagner came back with an apology of sorts.
“After having some time to reflect, I realize my twitter comments earlier this week unintentionally fanned the flames on a controversial situation, and that I regret. I made the comments out of a feeling of frustration, but they weren’t productive or positive.”
I apologize, @rachelvmckinnon , for not properly congratulating you on race day. I hope you accept it a few days late. Congratulations and enjoy your off-season. Thanks, everyone, for reading. –Jennifer
But McKinnon did not feel that her apology was adequate.
“This is why the apology is not accepted: she still thinks what she said. She merely apologizes for being caught saying it publicly. She wants to ban trans women from competing. They will fail: the IOC openly allowed us in 2003 and revised their policies in 2015. #MoveOn“
Oh, and to be clear McKinnon has not gone through the full change so her biology is still very much male, meaning still producing testosterone. Some argue that it would be a more even race if transgender women were to take testosterone blockers, but McKinnon is against this. She feels it is against her human rights.
“Subjecting trans women to testosterone blocking violates their human rights.”
“Focusing on performance advantage is largely irrelevant because this is a rights issue,” McKinnon explains. “We shouldn’t be worried about trans people taking over the Olympics. We should be worried about their fairness and human rights instead.”
So women will be disqualified if they take testosterone before a race. But if you are a man identifying as a woman you are in the clear and your advantage is considered fair. These rules are ridiculous. McKinnon has a clear advantage but I guess in this PC climate it’s insensitive to suggest as much. McKinnon just wants to keep the advantage, she’d likely otherwise lose in a fair race.
