A South Carolina Mom, Jamie Rathburn, did what was needed to be done. She found out her child was being picked on day after day. He was being teased and harassed. So after a year of inaction on the part of the school, she showed up to the school to handle it herself.

She tried to get the school to act at first.

Rathburn first sent an email to her son’s teacher in December, she said. One of her son’s classmates had picked on him about his hair, she alleged.

“Picking becomes bullying really quickly nowadays, and I’ve taught my kids not to tolerate it, so before something transpires could you address it,” Rathburn asked in an email she shared with The Greenville News.”

During the school year, Rathburn said, her son started having “random bouts of depression,” his grades were impacted, he tried to make excuses to avoid going to school and he woke up with nightmares.

Rathburn said at first he would tell her what happened but stopped when nothing changed. She said she still knew something was wrong, though, because he “wears his heart on his sleeve.”

But by May, Rathburn’s frustration reached a boiling point. She told administrators at Greenbrier that she was considering reporting them for not addressing the bullying situation, she told The Greenville News and wrote in an email to Brian Sherman, the assistant to the superintendent for the school district. She said that in response to her complaints, administrators separated her son on the playground so they could more easily watch him.”

Teachers told the student to just ignore the bullying. But it never stopped for the student.

Rathburn went into the school before the morning bell rang and scolded the students, according to one teacher she said she did not know “who was bullying her son but that she was going to find them and their moms. ”

Rathburn was banned from entering the school and was arrested for disturbing the school.

Rathburn apologized for her actions but says that she felt she was left with no other choice after the school failed to act in any meaningful way.

“I am absolutely ashamed of myself for the actions of walking up into that school,” she told the Greenville News. “You know, I owe the parents, the children and the staff an apology for that. Absolutely, it was wrong. But honestly, I don’t know how I could have gotten my message across any other way.”

“Rathburn said she regrets her actions, but remains concerned about bullying. She says her son has been teased, hit with a computer and grabbed by his throat.”

Rathburn said she met with Brian Sherman (The Assistant Superintendent of schools) on May 28 but felt unsatisfied with the response to her concerns. She is considering homeschooling her kids next year.

“I don’t know if what I’m doing is right or wrong, but what I do know is I have to do my best,” she said. “My one job that’s more important than anything else in this life is to make sure that they are better than me, to make sure that they are better than my husband, to make sure they have had a better upbringing and outlook on life than what we had.”

Good for her. That school was negligent. Their actions were too little too late. They needed to stop it. The other alternative was to get that kid some self-defense and have them fight it out, make him less of a target. I feel this school owes her an apology, she went in there and did their job for them. That school rep is full of it, claiming its never ok to scold someone’s kid. The school was failing this boy and should be ashamed that it had to get to this level.
