Usually Politicians are trying to get everyone’s vote but in this case, it seems they are not concerned about white folks. A Savannah Georgia mayoral event did not allow any white reporters.

Race was front and center on Wednesday night during a meeting coordinated to garner support for just one black candidate in Savannah’s mayoral election.

With signs stating “Black press only” on the doors of the church where the meeting was held, white reporters were barred from entry, while black reporters for at least two television stations were permitted inside.

The event was coordinated by the Rev. Clarence Teddy Williams, owner of the consulting firm, The Trigon Group, who declined to discuss the entry policy.

Former Savannah Mayor Edna Jackson declined to comment before going inside, as did Chatham County Commissioner Chester Ellis.

“This is not my idea,” Ellis said.”

Former Savannah Mayor Edna Jackson “declined to comment,” said the paper, as did Chatham County Commissioner Chester Ellis, who weakly deflected by telling the press that the policy was “not my idea.” Similarly, Savannah Alderman Estella Shabazz “declined to comment.”

Van Johnson, a Savannah mayoral candidate, spoke at the event. Instead of offering a condemnation of the discriminatory policy, Johnson iterated to the paper “that he believed people have the right to assemble and determine the rules of their assembly.”

“It’s not my meeting,” he offered. “I was asked to come and give a statement, so I came and I gave a statement. What I said in there, I’ll say out here.”

To be clear, nothing illegal transpired here. Individuals and organizations which host events on private property are free to grant (and refuse) admittance to would-be attendees as they see fit. In other words, they are free to discriminate – on whatever grounds they choose.

And there is nothing anyone can do about it …

As we have often noted, such discrimination is wrong (and bad for business), but people have a right to be racist. That may not be a popular view, but it is the proper view – even as we abhor racism in the same breath.”
