Oregon Senate Republicans Outsmart Dem Majority From Passing Gun Control Legislation
Super Minority Oregon Republicans were in a pickle when the Dems who hold the majority in the state tried to go after their constituents 2nd Amendment rights. There was not much they could do as their votes would not stop the bill. But despite their small number they took on the Dems and were able to stop them in their tracks.
They simply staged a walkout preventing the Dems from being able to form a quorum saving the rights of their citizens. The Dems at first did nothing thinking the Republicans would come back. But after a week the Dems caved and begged the Republicans to come back and agreed to drop the Gun Control Bill.
The Gun Control bill would have given “firearms dealers the option of raising the minimum purchase age to between 18 and 21 and require firearms to be securely stored when not in use. Depending on the specifics, violations of the safe storage law could be a Class A violation, a Class B misdemeanor or a Class A misdemeanor.
The bill also would have placed restrictions on the sale of unfinished and 3D-printed firearms — sometimes called “ghost guns.” Other rules in the bill would have added hospital reporting requirements for patients injured by firearms and would have allowed colleges and universities to ban firearms on campus.”
“In a press release Tuesday, the NRA Institute for Legislative Action cheered the Senate Republicans for playing hardball, but warned that the Oregon Democrats are playing the long game. “Last week, a pro-Second Amendment group of Senators took a stand against Senate Bill 978 by refusing to participate in floor sessions until the omnibus gun control bill was withdrawn from consideration.
Yesterday, Oregon Senate Leadership reached an agreement that anti-gun legislation, which includes SB 978, will not be moving forward this year and is defeated for the session,” the NRA-ILA announced. “While Senate Bill 978 will not be moving forward this session, anti-gun legislators have already announced they intend to reintroduce a similar version next year or potentially file a ballot initiative in 2020.”
It was like David and Goliath, but unfortunately, the Dems will likely try this bill again in the future. This is a slippery slope and should be a wake-up call for Oregonians they almost lost some of their rights.
