Sorry Smokers…Marlboro Will Soon Stop Making Cigarettes Forever
Is this for real? Is Marlboro really going to stop selling cigarettes?
Yes. In fact, it is. The world’s largest cigarette company, Philip Morris International, announced that they are moving towards smokeless alternatives to cigarettes such as e-cigarettes and safer tobacco products.
According to an article at Rare.us,
Back in December, it was reported that Philips Morris invested a hefty amount in a Cannabis company. Altria, which was founded by PMI, bought a 45% stake for $1.8 billion in a Canadian company called Cronos Group. The deal places them at 55% ownership within 5 years, so it’s safe to say smokeless tobacco isn’t the companies only direction.
The company will now focus on the IQOS. A device which heats tobacco instead of burning it. The product has the potential to reduce “the number of noxious chemicals” found in cigarette smoke by 95 percent. CEO of Phillip Morris International, Andre Calantzopulous, spoke about his decision, stating, “At the end of the day, the ambition we have is to replace cigarettes as soon as possible, with better alternatives for the people who continue smoking.”
Calantzopulous also stated that “If we stop selling cigarettes, someone else is going to sell them because people buy them, so I don’t think that will have any impact on public health or the health of people.”
According to Newsweek,
On its website, the Philip Morris International further explains its reasoning for moving away from cigarettes after the products helped them become one of the biggest companies on the planet.
“We understand the millions of men and women who smoke cigarettes,” the company said. “They are looking for less harmful, yet satisfying, alternatives to smoking. We will give them that choice.”
“We have a commitment to our employees and our shareholders. We will fulfill that commitment by pursuing this long-term vision for success.”
This is something they should have done years ago. Even before e-cigarettes came along, cigarette companies should have found safer and healthier alternatives to the way they were making cigarettes such as removing the poisonous chemicals.
Native Americans smoked tobacco long before Marlboro came along and started adding chemicals to the tobacco.
