Usually, when a child is sent home with a disciplinary note, it is a sign that the child was showing a lack of manners. But a North Carolina mother found herself in an odd situation, where her son was actually being punished for being respectful to his elders.
Parents Teretha Wilson and Mcarthur Bryant are upset that their son was reprimanded and surprisingly they should be. The 10-year-old, Tamarion Wilson, was disciplined for calling his teacher ma’am, a sign of respect.
“He had a look on his face of disappointment, shame,” said his father, McArthur Bryant.
Wilson and Bryant said their children were taught to refer to elders as “ma’am” and “sir,” and that Tamarion was not intending to be disrespectful.
“At the end of the day as a father, to feel kind of responsible for that…knowing that I have been raising him and doing the best that I can, it’s not acceptable,” said Bryant.
They added that Tamarion was hospitalized last month for a seizure-related activity, which included memory loss and hallucinations, something the teacher was unaware of.”
As if the weird reaction of the teacher was not enough, she also threatened to throw something at him if he continued to use the word, ma’am.
“It wasn’t right. It wasn’t professional. As a teacher, it wasn’t appropriate. And I asked her why she thought it was okay to do that,” said [Teretha] Wilson.”
The Wilsons’ talked to the principle and had their son moved to another class. But this is such an odd case to think that manners would get a student in trouble. That teacher should be thankful, there are plenty of kids out there that would not show the proper respect to an elder. But I guess the respect is squandered on her, as she took it as an insult.
