Southerners Have A Unique Way Of Saying ‘Don’t Tread On Us’ And Their New Responses To Federal Talk About Gun Laws Will Make You Chuckle.
As an Atlanta native now living in South Carolina I found these two stories particularly enjoyable. Southerners, historically, have a ‘push-back’ attitude especially when it comes to the Federal Government interjecting themselves into State business.
Recent talks about possible Federal gun laws has the lower States ready to defend their Constitutional rights or at the very least have their voices heard. In the past, when the Federal government implemented mass regulations the South generally responded by not enforcing those laws. If a Federal law is passed, that’s what I suspect will happen.
According to The Hill, A group of Republican state legislators in South Carolina introduced a measure Thursday that would allow the state to secede from the United States if the federal government began to seize legally purchased firearms in the state.
The bill, which was referred to the state House Judiciary Committee on Thursday, would allow South Carolina lawmakers to debate whether to secede from the United States if the federal government were to violate the Second Amendment.
The officials have stated they are aware the likelihood their secession will be granted is slim-to-none. That didn’t stop them, nor should it. In the past, it’s often the first step towards negotiations.
In the bill officials site “the general assembly shall convene to consider whether to secede from the United States based upon the federal government’s unconstitutional violation of the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution if the federal government confiscates legally purchased firearms in this state.”
Georgia’s response might be my favorite. Though their response has been on more of an individual basis, one Harris County Sheriff’s take should make you smile. Take a look.
Sheriff Jolley’s sign reads:
“Our citizens have concealed weapons,” the welcome sign reads in part. “If you kill someone, we might kill you back. Enjoy your stay!”
This isn’t the first time Sheriff Jolley’s use of signs has made it into the news. according to Fox News, Jolley’s previous sign in 2015 defended the American flag and Christmas. He paid $553 for the sign out of his own pocket.
The text read: “WARNING: Harris County is politically incorrect. We say: Merry Christmas, God Bless America and In God We Trust. We salute our troops and our flag. If this offends you…LEAVE!”
Do you think these States are taking things ‘too far’ or should the Federal Government leave local gun laws in the hands of their respective States? Let us know in the comments below.
