ABC Suspends “The View” Host For Her Stance On The Holocaust

She should have known better. During a heated discussion about the banning of a Holocaust-themed comic book, “The View” host Whoopi Goldberg pushed some misinformation about the Jewish people, she claimed they are not a race, they are just white people. She quickly found out how wrong she was about this statement and apologized. But that was not enough for ABC’s President who took it a step further.

The original exchange.

GOLDBERG: Well also, if we’re going to do this, then let’s be truthful about it because the Holocaust isn’t about race.

HAINES: No.

GOLDBERG: No. It’s not about race.

[Crosstalk]

BEHAR: They considered Jews a different race.

GOLDBERG: It’s not about race. It’s not about race.

BEHAR: What is it about?

GOLDBERG: It’s about man’s inhumanity to man. That’s what it’s about.

ANA NAVARRO: But it’s about white supremacy.

[Crosstalk]

NAVARRO: It’s about going after Jews and Gypsies and Romas

[Crosstalk]

GOLDBERG: But these are two white groups of people. How do we —

BEHAR: Well, they went after black people too.

HAINES: They did not see them as white though.

GOLDBERG: But you’re missing the point! You’re missing the point. The minute you turn it into race, it goes down this alley. Let’s talk about it for what it is. It’s how people treat each other. It’s a problem. It doesn’t matter if you are black or white because black, white, Jews, Italians, everybody eats each other.

So is it — if you are uncomfortable if you hear about Maus, should you be worried — should your child say, oh my god, I wonder if that’s me? No. That’s not what they’re going to say. They’re going to say, I don’t want to be like that.

After a public outcry Goldberg apologized:

“Yesterday on our show, I misspoke,” she began. “And I tweeted about it last night but I kind of want you to hear it from me directly. I said something that I feel a responsibility for not leaving unexamined because my words upset so many people, which was never my intention. And I understand why now, and for that, I am deeply, deeply grateful because the information I got was really helpful and helped me understand some different things.”

“I said that the Holocaust was ‘not about race’ and was instead about man’s inhumanity to man,” she continued, adding, “But it is indeed about race, because Hitler and the Nazis considered Jews to be an inferior race. Now, words matter and mine are no exception. I regret my comments, as I said, and I stand corrected. I also stand with the Jewish people as they know, and y’all know, because I’ve always done that.”

But that wasn’t enough for ABC. ABC’s President, Kim Godwin, announced that Whoopi Goldberg was going to get some time off to reflect on what she said.

“Effective immediately, I am suspending Whoopi Goldberg for two weeks for her wrong and hurtful comments,” reads a statement attributed to Kim Godwin, president at ABC News. “While Whoopi has apologized, I’ve asked her to take time to reflect and learn about the impact of her comments. The entire ABC News organization stands in solidarity with our Jewish colleagues, friends, family, and communities.”

The Nazis viewed the Jewish people as an inferior race that they tried to completely exterminate. They killed at least 6 million Jews with some estimates claiming it was closer to 11 million. This was a genocide that shouldn’t be watered down as white people vs white people. Whoopi should have known better. Maybe the ladies at “The View” will start thinking before they run their mouths now. But I guess that’s a tall order.
