Leo Terrell, a civil rights lawyer and contributor to Fox News, had words of criticism for affirmative action policies during an appearance on “The Faulkner Focus” on Monday. The Supreme Court is set to consider if race should be a factor in college admissions decisions, after the case of Asian student Jon Wang, who despite his high SAT and ACT scores was denied admittance to top-tier schools.
“The left continues to play the race card, as if it’s still 1965 or 1975,” said Terrell. “The only way to ensure equal opportunity is by giving people a chance to engage in hard work and achieve results. This young man achieved, but his skin color sees him being denied regardless. This is nothing but a ‘equity game’, one that is doing harm to genuinely hard-working individuals.”
Terrell then took offense to the media manipulating Asian Americans into supporting affirmative action. Although numerous polls show an overall support, many Asian Americans do not believe race should be taken into account when considering applications.
“The left-wing media is leveraging the public opinion here, making people believe that opportunities are denied because of skin color, when this simply is not true,” said Terrell. “With the nation more diverse than ever before, with a black president in the past and leaders of all colors in prominent cities, the notion of affirmative action needs to be removed. People should not be punished for their hard work.”
He also scrutinized the left’s attitude in touting the United States as a systemically racist country in which black and brown people are not capable of achieving success without support from the government.
Finally, Terrell echoed his earlier remarks, stressing that the Supreme Court should resign the affirmative action governing policies. He firmly believes that ending the policy today is the best decision for all involved.
