The appointment of special counsel David Weiss to continue the ongoing investigation into Hunter Biden has come under heavy scrutiny due to allegations involving Weiss, a senior official at the US Justice Department. In an October 22 email, Weiss allegedly told a group of law enforcement officials that he “was not the deciding person on whether charges [would be] filed” in the Hunter case, which has prompted speculation that Weiss may have allowed Hunter to obtain a sweetheart deal.
The development has been met with derision from those on the right, but Democrats have insisted that the “rule of law and the justice system” is in motion. Ranking member of the House Oversight Committee Jamie Raskin was reluctant to talk about the Biden family’s involvement in any shady business dealings, but eventually admitted that Hunter was “addicted to drugs and did a lot of really unlawful and wrong things.”
“Obviously, it’s bumpy and this side or that side doesn’t necessarily prefer this course of events, but our job I think as political people is to allow the justice system to run its course,” said Raskin when asked about the Weiss appointment. He went on to say that the public should “[let] the Justice Department do their job.”
The incident shows that the Biden’s are far from exempt from the rule of law. Hunter Biden’s past indiscretions have been well documented and President Joe Biden, the father of Hunter, has failed to adequately address his son’s behavior. Hunter’s past mistakes have raised questions about the President’s decision making, his integrity, and his fitness for office.
“Hunter Biden did ‘really unlawful and wrong things,’ said Raskin on ABC’s This Week.” This statement directly counters the Biden administration’s adamant refusal to accept any wrongdoing on the part of Hunter Biden. With the appointment of special counsel Weiss, it is likely that whatever is uncovered as the investigation moves forward will force the administration to admit the truth, regardless of how uncomfortable it may be.
