Democratic Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez recently struggled to answer basic questions about the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas during a CNN interview. When asked how Israel should respond to the recent attacks from Hamas, Ocasio-Cortez stumbled and failed to provide a clear answer, instead focusing on criticizing Israel’s actions.
Despite being pressed by CNN anchor Abby Phillip, Ocasio-Cortez could not explain how Israel should respond to the brutal attack and mass abduction of their citizens by Hamas. Instead, she stated that a ceasefire agreement would mean both parties put down their arms, but failed to acknowledge Hamas’ numerous rocket attacks on Israel as well.
When Phillip pressed her again on whether Israel should forcefully respond to Hamas’ attack, Ocasio-Cortez seemed flustered and eventually admitted that Israel has a right to self-defense. However, she quickly shifted the conversation to criticizing Israel’s actions, claiming that they were committing acts of “collective punishment” and using “indiscriminate weapons” such as white phosphorus.
Phillip continued to press Ocasio-Cortez on how else Israel should deal with a violent and militant group like Hamas, which is detrimental to both Israelis and Palestinians. Ocasio-Cortez failed to provide any alternative approach and instead continued to criticize Israel’s response, while demeaning the complexity of the situation.
Phillip pointed out that Israel’s goal is to rid the region of Hamas, a fact that Ocasio-Cortez seemed to overlook. The congresswoman also failed to acknowledge that President Biden himself warned against Israel performing a ground invasion into Gaza.
Despite acknowledging that Hamas needs to be dealt with, Ocasio-Cortez still could not provide a clear answer on how to handle the situation. When pressed on the issue, she stumbled and suggested that the options available to Israel are “up to the administration” and that they should explore precision and intelligence-based methods instead of their current approach.
In reality, Hamas is a terrorist organization that has been launching attacks on Israel for decades. Their recent incursion resulted in the deaths of over 1,000 Israeli civilians and the abduction of approximately 150 Israeli citizens into Gaza. In response, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu formally declared war on Hamas.
Ocasio-Cortez, along with other left-wing Democrats, co-signed a letter calling for Israel to enter a ceasefire agreement with Hamas. This is not surprising given Ocasio-Cortez’s long history of criticizing Israel and accusing them of apartheid. It’s no coincidence that as pro-Palestine protests sweep the nation, left-wing criticism of Israel has intensified.

In her interview with CNN, Ocasio-Cortez failed to provide a meaningful solution to the conflict between Israel and Hamas. Instead, she resorted to criticizing Israel’s actions and disregarding the real threats posed by Hamas. It’s clear that Ocasio-Cortez is more interested in advancing her anti-Israel agenda than finding a real solution to this ongoing conflict.
