The financial strain of illegal immigration on American taxpayers is staggering. A recent study has revealed that over half of the households headed by non-citizens are receiving welfare benefits, putting an undue burden on hard-working American citizens. The Center for Immigration Studies analyzed data from the 2022 Census Bureau’s Survey of Income and Program Participation, and the results are concerning.
The study, conducted by Steven A. Camarota and Karen Zeigler, found that a significant 54 percent majority of immigrant households are utilizing at least one welfare program. This includes both naturalized citizens and those who have entered the country illegally. However, the situation is even worse when looking solely at households led by green card holders or illegal aliens. An astounding 59 percent of these households are on welfare, highlighting the heavy reliance on taxpayer-funded benefits among migrant communities.
This trend of high welfare usage among immigrants is prevalent across all socioeconomic levels, indicating that it is not just the poorest migrants who are taking advantage of these benefits. This reality flies in the face of the commonly held belief that migrants are more productive and offer cheap labor for the ultra-wealthy in the United States. In fact, the study shows that the percentage of migrants on welfare far surpasses that of native-born citizens, highlighting the disproportionate impact on American taxpayers.
"Somewhat surprisingly, we also find that immigrant higher-income, better-educated, and childless households are all more likely to use welfare than their U.S.-born counterparts."

The Biden administration’s lax immigration policies have only exacerbated this issue. With record numbers of illegal immigrants entering the country, the strain on American taxpayers is only growing. As the Financial Times reports, the United States is breaking annual records at the U.S.-Mexico border, with large groups of asylum seekers being released from detention with minimal oversight. This not only puts a financial burden on American taxpayers but also poses a security risk.

Furthermore, a study by Harvard academic George Borjas found that mass immigration has a significant negative impact on the wages and economic standing of American citizens. This detriment to the American workforce is amplified during the holiday season. As many Americans struggle to make ends meet, they are forced to cut back on holiday spending. According to a recent survey, one in five Americans couldn’t afford Christmas gifts this year, and the number is even higher among low-income families.
The adverse effects of mass immigration on the American economy are also evident in the traditionally manic shopping frenzy of Black Friday. This year, many stores were notably emptier than usual as Americans continue to feel the financial strain of the ongoing pandemic and the added burden of illegal immigration. The result is a weaker economy and a poorer quality of life for American citizens.
NEW: Mass illegal crossings beginning in Brownsville, TX again in the RGV. This photo from a source on the ground 2 hours ago. The RGV had been fairly slow recently, but seems to be picking up again. CBP source tells me RGV sector had just under 1,500 illegal crossings yesterday. pic.twitter.com/cJUm0lGeo6

The data doesn’t lie – the high rate of welfare usage among migrants and the negative impact on American citizens cannot be ignored. With record numbers of illegal immigrants entering the country, the burden on taxpayers will only continue to grow. It’s time for policymakers to address the impact of mass immigration on the American economy and put the needs of American citizens first.
