Republican Senator John Kennedy of Louisiana did not hold back during his questioning of Attorney General Merrick Garland on Wednesday. He pointedly asked why the Department of Justice (DOJ) allowed the statute of limitations to expire on the alleged tax crimes committed by President Biden’s son, Hunter Biden.
According to Kennedy, U.S. Attorney Matthew Graves, appointed by President Biden, made the decision not to collaborate with special counsel David Weiss on the Hunter Biden case. This ultimately led to the statute of limitations running out for potential tax charges related to Hunter’s income from Ukrainian energy company Burisma Holdings. Kennedy wasted no time in accusing Hunter of various tax crimes and demanded an explanation from the attorney general as to why the DOJ allowed enough time to pass for Hunter to avoid prosecution.
The senator stated that in 2014 and 2015, Hunter Biden failed to pay taxes on $1 million and even claimed deductions for personal expenses such as prostitutes, a Lamborghini, strip clubs, sex clubs, and membership to porn websites. He then put the blame on the DOJ for letting the statute of limitations run out and preventing any potential prosecution of Hunter.
Garland, in response, explained that the investigation of Hunter’s alleged tax crimes was initiated by Weiss, who was appointed by former President Donald Trump as the U.S. attorney for Delaware. He added that Weiss has continued his investigation and has now been appointed as special counsel. Garland also mentioned that Weiss will issue a report that will clarify the matter at hand.
Kennedy, however, was not satisfied with this response and accused the DOJ of turning a blind eye to Hunter’s alleged crimes and allowing him to go free. The attorney general, in turn, reiterated that he could not comment on a pending investigation, and it will be up to Weiss to provide an explanation in his report.
Kennedy then proposed that Garland accompany Weiss to testify on the matter, but the attorney general dismissed the idea, saying it would be pointless.
The senator’s line of questioning clearly aimed to cast a negative light on the Biden administration and raise doubts about their credibility. By pointing out the alleged tax crimes of Hunter Biden and criticizing the DOJ’s handling of the case, Kennedy attempted to create suspicion and raise concerns about the current administration’s ability to uphold justice and transparency.
In conclusion, it is clear that Senator Kennedy used this opportunity to push a political agenda and paint a negative image of the Biden administration. However, as Attorney General Garland pointed out, the investigation is still ongoing, and a report will be issued, which will provide clarity on the matter. Making baseless accusations and trying to put the blame on the current administration without any solid evidence is a disservice to the justice system and only serves to further fuel political agendas.
