Liberal Los Angeles Councilman Boasts About City’s Large Undocumented Population, Claims They Make Economy Run
Los Angeles Councilman Hugo Soto-Martinez appeared on CNN News Central, where he boasted about the city’s “largest undocumented population” and their contributions to the economy.
Soto-Martinez side-stepped co-host John Berman’s question about whether he was out of touch with the American people, given President-elect Donald Trump’s victory.
The councilman defended the move to declare Los Angeles a sanctuary city, claiming that they are “speaking to the issues” that working people face, such as increasing cost of living and lack of affordable housing.
However, when pressed about whether this move goes against Trump’s promise of mass deportations, Soto-Martinez shifted the focus to the president’s policies on immigration and the nomination of a “border czar” who put kids in cages.
He then claimed that going against these policies is “the correct thing” to do, especially in a city like Los Angeles with a large undocumented population that “makes our economy run.”
But the reality is, illegal immigration has become a major concern for Americans after a series of crimes committed by illegal immigrants and the struggles faced by cities like Springfield, Ohio after an influx of over 20,000 Haitian migrants.
Furthermore, according to figures released by CBP, the Border Patrol has encountered over 7.4 million illegal immigrants since the start of fiscal year 2021.
So while Soto-Martinez may claim that undocumented immigrants make the economy run, the truth is that illegal immigration has a significant impact on jobs and wages for American citizens.
And with Trump’s promise to crack down on illegal immigration and protect American workers, it’s no surprise that he won the election and is now the president-elect.
Endorsing open borders and sanctuary cities may appeal to liberal politicians like Soto-Martinez, but it goes against the best interests of American citizens and legal immigrants.
