Mitchell’s stepmother called 911 on April 22, 2024, reporting a burglary in progress. Police arrived to find the Democrat senator trying to escape through the basement. Officers discovered a backpack containing stolen items, including two laptops, a cellphone, Tupperware, and a flashlight covered with a sock—an apparent attempt to avoid leaving fingerprints. Mitchell’s pathetic excuse? “Clearly I’m not good at this,” she allegedly told police, according to court documents. “I know I did something bad.” Yet, despite this admission, Mitchell pleaded not guilty and later claimed she was only trying to help a loved one with Alzheimer’s—a story that conveniently changed after she was caught.
