Jasmine Crockett Accuses Democrats of Racism

Rep. Jasmine Crockett is calling out the left. She says some attacks against her in the Texas Senate primary aren’t about policy. They’re about race.

The race is tight. RealClearPolling shows Crockett and James Talarico neck-and-neck in the Democratic primary. That background matters. It helps explain the heat.

At a recent campaign event in Richardson, Crockett went straight at the criticism coming from other Democrats. She said it felt personal. And she accused them of using racialized imagery.

“The thing that’s not normal is for me too be attacked from the left. That is the new wild wildcard in scenario. It’s just interesting,” Crockett said. “I’ve been asked a couple of times a couple of things about it. I look at this specifically as a civil rights lawyer. I’ve seen that sending out ads in darkening my skin, I am just like, I know what this is. And the reality is that, I woke up a black woman. I was born a black woman. I was a black woman for everyone who doesn’t think I know, just FYI. But I am not running on the fact that I am a black woman. I’m running on my credentials.”

She didn’t just say it in the crowd. Crockett also talked about the issue on national TV and in interviews. Part of her argument is that a campaign tactic — like altering photos or running certain ads — crossed a line.

Here’s how one campaign clip shared online framed her remarks:

Jasmine Crockett says Democrats’ attacks on her are racially motivated:

There’s another wrinkle. Talarico recently appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Crockett says Colbert never invited her before or after that interview. She says a rep from the parent company called her campaign with some explanation.

That exchange and her statements got picked up and shared online too:

Jasmine Crockett just blew up the Talarico/Colbert narrative:

“I’ve not been invited on Colbert prior to [Talarico’s] interview nor post his interview.”

“I did receive a phone call from a representative for the parent company that basically said they did not tell them they did not invite them… pic.twitter.com/rHDN998Yvy

Bottom line: Crockett is making race part of the conversation inside her own party. Her rivals say this is standard politics in a tight primary. Supporters say she’s calling out unfair tactics. Either way, expect this to keep bubbling up as the primary heads toward the finish line.
