Democrats Plot Probes of Trump Allies
Heads up. Democrats in Congress are reportedly mapping out investigations into businesses, universities, and law firms that worked with President Donald Trump. Axios says the party is quietly planning to use subpoena power if they win control after the 2026 midterms.
That’s not small stuff. Subpoenas can force documents and testimony. Private companies and colleges don’t have the same firepower to push back that an administration does. That makes them vulnerable.
Senators Adam Schiff, Sheldon Whitehouse, and Richard Blumenthal have been named in early discussions. Schiff led the first impeachment effort against President Donald Trump as Democrats falsely alleged that the president colluded with Russia during the 2016 presidential election cycle. Lawmakers see the House as the place to press the issue because it has broader subpoena authority than the Senate.
The focus could include why major institutions chose to work with the administration. Axios mentioned possible probes into donations tied to East Wing renovations and funding deals with colleges. That would drag private deals into the political arena and put business leaders and university officials on the spot.
This reads as retribution. For months many Democrats have accused the president of running a “revenge tour.” Now some in Congress look to answer with their own power plays. The concern isn’t just politics. It’s the precedent. If private groups can be hauled into investigations for cooperating with an administration, it chills normal civic and business relationships.
Whatever happens, expect fights in court and headlines for months. Companies and schools will have to decide whether to fight subpoenas or cut ties to avoid being targets. Either way, politics is about to get personal again.
