WATCH: 43 Tall Ships Gather Off New Jersey for America 250
A big fleet of tall ships has dropped anchor near Sandy Hook, New Jersey, and it is turning heads fast. The ships came in from across the world to help kick off America’s 250th birthday celebration. It is the kind of scene that looks straight out of another era.
The event is part of Sail4th 250, a major tribute tied to the nation’s semiquincentennial. Officials say roughly 20 nations sent ships for the celebration, with vessels arriving from places like Italy, India, Peru, Poland, Spain, and Sweden. The full fleet includes 43 ships, split between 21 Class A ships and 22 Class B ships.
The setting matters too. Sandy Hook is a historic spot, and Gov. Mikie Sherrill pointed that out during the rollout. “Nearly 250 years ago, it was here at Sandy Hook that George Washington’s army drove the British from New Jersey,” said Gov. Mikie Sherrill, a former naval officer. “It was from this day that the last British ships of the Revolutionary War departed.”
That mix of history and pageantry is a big part of the appeal. These ships are not just pretty to look at. They are reminders of a time when sail ruled the water and naval travel depended on skill, wind, and a lot of patience. The craftsmanship is hard to miss.
One of the main stars is the U.S. Coast Guard cutter Eagle. The ship is roughly the size of a football field and is set to lead the America 250 Parade of Sail. Built in Germany in 1936, the Eagle has the kind of tall masts and square sails that stop people in their tracks.
New Jersey shore watchers already got a preview of the scene, with videos showing rows of ships sitting off Sandy Hook Bay before Saturday’s parade. The photos and clips make one thing clear: this is not a small celebration. It is a major maritime gathering, and it has the look of something people will talk about for years.

For a holiday tied to America’s history, it is hard to imagine a better visual. Old-world ships. A historic shoreline. And a huge birthday milestone for the United States. That is a strong backdrop for the next chapter of the celebration.
