DC Medical Examiner Releases Preliminary Findings After Lindsey Graham’s Death

The DC Medical Examiner’s Office has released preliminary examination findings following the sudden death of Republican Senator Lindsey Graham.

Graham died Saturday night at the age of 71. His passing stunned Washington and South Carolina, where he had served for years as one of the state’s best-known political figures.

According to reports, audio from a 911 call indicated Graham had been suffering chest pains before going into cardiac arrest at his home in Washington, DC. Emergency details surrounding the call have drawn attention as officials continue working through the formal process after his death.

Graham’s office said the early medical finding pointed to a serious cardiovascular event.

“The preliminary examination findings were: Aortic Dissection due to Arteriosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease,” Graham’s office said.

In plain terms, an aortic dissection involves a tear in the wall of the aorta, the body’s main artery. Arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease refers to hardening and narrowing of the arteries, a condition that can place major strain on the heart and blood vessels.

The finding is still preliminary. Officials said the death certificate has not yet been finalized while additional lab work continues.

“The death certificate will be PENDING until all the toxicological and microscopic testing are finalized and at that point the death certificate will be updated to reflect the cause of death and appropriately classify the manner of death.”

The FBI is assisting local authorities, though Fox News reported that foul play is not suspected in Graham’s death. That means investigators are still involved, but the early public reporting does not point to a criminal act.

President Trump reacted to the news early Sunday morning, calling Graham a close friend and praising his work in the Senate.

“Senator Lindsey Graham, one of the greatest people and Senators I have ever known, is dead! He was always working, and was a true American Patriot. Lindsey will be greatly missed!!! DETAILS AND ARRANGEMENTS TO FOLLOW. So sad!” Trump said early Sunday morning.

Later Sunday, Trump ordered American flags across the country lowered to half-staff in Graham’s honor.

“In honor of the remarkable life and achievements of Senator Lindsey Graham, a dear friend of mine, and a truly great man, who achieved so much for our Country, and his beloved Home State of South Carolina, I am ordering all American Flags throughout the United States lowered to Half Mast until Saturday evening at 6 P.M. GOD BLESS YOU LINDSEY!” Trump said.

Further details, including final medical findings and memorial arrangements, are expected after the remaining testing is complete and Graham’s office releases more information.
