Rep. Ilhan Omar’s Labor Day message was supposed to show support for American workers. Instead, her photo inside a Teamsters Union semi-truck became the target of a fast-moving online backlash.

Omar shared the image while trying to highlight the importance of American labor. Her caption read, “America is only as strong as the labor that builds it every day. Happy Labor Day.”

That message was quickly overshadowed by criticism of the photo itself. Many commenters argued that the image looked more like a political photo-op than a meaningful tribute to the workers Omar claimed to be honoring.

One major criticism centered on trucking safety and immigration. The article pointed to a claim that, in 2025 alone, 17 crashes involving illegal-alien truck drivers killed 30 Americans. Critics said that backdrop made Omar’s decision to pose inside a semi-truck especially tone-deaf.

After the post began drawing heat, Omar turned off the comments. That did not stop users from reposting the image and criticizing her across the platform.

One widely shared response accused Omar of using the Labor Day message to distract from concerns involving truck drivers and road safety.

Another post mocked the scene and questioned whether the image represented a change in Omar’s political views. The account also asked whether she was now presenting herself as pro-American.

Laura Loomer joined the criticism by making jokes about the truck’s visibility and the language requirements for commercial drivers. Other users questioned whether Omar was qualified to operate the vehicle, even though the image showed her posing inside the cab.

One especially aggressive commenter accused Omar of taunting Americans and demanded that she be removed from office and deported. Other posts made similar calls for her to leave the truck and Congress.

Additional commenters suggested that Omar was unqualified to drive the vehicle. Another said she appeared ready to run over Americans and urged that she be removed from office. A separate post speculated, without evidence, that money was the reason she was sitting in the cab.

The episode shows how quickly a carefully staged political image can backfire online. Omar’s short Labor Day message was overtaken by arguments about immigration, trucking safety, qualifications, and whether elected officials understand working Americans.
