Elon Musk Says “They Made Election Fraud Mandatory” After Mother’s New York ID Dispute

Elon Musk is taking aim at New York’s voting rules after his mother, Maye Musk, said a poll worker knocked away the identification she offered at a polling place.

Maye Musk, a 78-year-old model, dietitian, and author, was responding to a list identifying the 14 states that still do not require voter ID at the polls. Conservatives have long pointed to those states as reliable Democratic strongholds.

“Definitely New York,” she wrote. “When I voted and showed my ID, the woman was angry and hit it away.”

This was not the first time Maye Musk described resistance when she tried to show identification while voting. During the 2024 election cycle, she said early voting in New York City required no ID and that workers “won’t even look at your ID.” She later described being told to sign a form, place it in an envelope, and drop it in a box while a worker “refused to see my ID.”

Her latest account prompted a blunt response from her son. Musk said Democrats in New York and California had spent years dismissing concerns about voter identification as “disinformation.”

The Gateway Pundit report cites New York Attorney General Letitia James’s official voting-resources page. That page states that voters “are never required to present photo identification to cast an in-person ballot” and instructs New Yorkers: “If you see or hear of anyone improperly requesting voter identification, contact OAG.”

Poll-worker guidance follows the same general approach, according to the report. Workers are instructed not to ask for ID unless a voter’s record has already been flagged. Signature matching is used instead. The report’s argument is straightforward: a voter holding out a government ID could be viewed as doing something officials have been told not to request.

California has taken an even firmer position against local voter-ID rules. In 2024, Gov. Gavin Newsom signed Senate Bill 1174, which bars cities and counties from requiring identification at the polls. The law directly affected Huntington Beach after voters there approved their own ID requirement. Courts later struck down the local measure.

The Gateway Pundit report also points to California’s registration and first-time voting rules. It says applicants can register online without a driver’s license or Social Security number. For the rare first-time voter who is asked for identification, the state’s acceptable-ID list can include a gym card, an insurance card, or a credit card.

That contrast is the heart of the political argument. According to Fox News, New York City required emergency snow shovelers last winter to provide two photos, two original IDs, and a Social Security card. The same city’s election rules, as described in the report, tell poll workers not to demand a voter’s license.

The report also notes that Mayor Zohran Mamdani floated ID requirements for government grocery stores to prevent people from reselling discounted food. It contrasts that policy with common ID requirements for other activities, arguing that identification is expected to buy certain goods, board a plane, or pick up a prescription, but not necessarily to cast a ballot in New York or California.

Musk’s response turned his mother’s account into a broader fight over election safeguards. He used the episode to argue that New York and California’s rules go too far.
