Jack Smith’s Team Collected 4,782 Trump Donor Checks, Senate Republicans Say

Former Special Counsel Jack Smith is facing intense scrutiny after new disclosures surfaced during his testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Fox News Digital reported that investigators working under Smith obtained records containing communications between nearly 50 journalists and Trump administration officials. The records included communications involving Fox News personnel and journalists from CNN, CBS News, NBC News, CNBC, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, Bloomberg, the Los Angeles Times, New York Magazine, Reuters, The Associated Press, NPR, The Federalist, and The Washington Times.

According to a spokesperson for Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, the information came from whistleblower disclosures. National Archives records were produced in response to a subpoena seeking material connected to 87 White House phones from President Donald Trump’s first administration. Investigators had subpoenaed text-message records associated with dozens of White House phones during the federal election investigation involving Trump.

That was only part of the disclosure.

Senate Judiciary Republicans also said Smith’s team collected 4,782 personal checks from Americans who donated to Trump and Trump-aligned groups. The checks reportedly covered donations made between September 2019 and August 2023. The records came from donors nationwide, with information tied to people in all 50 states.

The Senate Judiciary Committee said the checks were obtained as part of the “Arctic Frost” election case. According to the committee, that gave the Biden Department of Justice and the FBI access to highly sensitive information belonging to nearly 5,000 Americans.

The information reportedly included home addresses, phone numbers, banking information, bank account numbers, bank routing numbers, and copies of donors’ signatures. Senate Judiciary Republicans also warned that additional subpoena returns could contain even more donor checks.

Grassley sharply condemned the use of the records. He argued that donations to Republican organizations were not necessary to the investigation and pointed out that the information was not mentioned in Smith’s public report.

There’s no legitimate basis for what you did. Especially since your staff killed an investigation into the Clinton campaign. Donations to Republican groups wasn’t necessary to your investigation, which is proved out by the fact it wasn’t mentioned in your public report. Now, the Justice Department and FBI will forever possess thousands of people’s addresses, phone numbers, banks, bank account numbers, bank routing numbers and copies of their true signatures. Every member on this committee ought to be outraged for what happened to their constituents. Which one of my Democratic colleagues will join me in that outrage?

The disclosures raise a direct question: why were the private financial records of ordinary Trump donors gathered during an election investigation? The committee’s disclosures indicate that the records went beyond communications involving political officials and included sensitive personal information from Americans who supported Trump-aligned causes.

Grassley said lawmakers should be outraged on behalf of their constituents. The Gateway Pundit described the matter as a breaking story and said it would be updated.
