Detroit Cracks Top 10 as Terminix Names America’s Most Rat-Infested Cities

Detroit Cracks America’s Top 10 Rat-Infested Cities as Terminix Releases Latest Ranking

Terminix has released its latest ranking of America’s most rat- and mouse-infested cities. The list includes several familiar names, along with one Midwest city that made a notable jump into the top 10.

New York and Los Angeles remain at the top of the ranking. Philadelphia moved up one spot to No. 3, while San Francisco held onto fourth place. Houston also moved into the top five this year.

The ranking is based on rodent-control service data collected from more than 300 Terminix branches across the country. The company reviewed where customers most frequently used its services during 2025 and used that information to rank the cities.

Here is the complete top 10 list:

  1. New York, New York
  2. Los Angeles, California
  3. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
  4. San Francisco, California
  5. Houston, Texas
  6. Chicago, Illinois
  7. Washington, D.C.
  8. Boston, Massachusetts
  9. Dallas, Texas
  10. Detroit, Michigan

Detroit’s appearance is one of the biggest changes in the latest ranking. The city entered the top 10 for the first time after moving up from No. 11. Houston also stood out by joining the top five, while New York, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, and San Francisco continued to occupy the leading spots.

The list includes returning cities such as Chicago, Washington, D.C., Boston, and Dallas. While the ranking reflects demand for Terminix rodent-control services rather than a direct count of every rat or mouse in each city, it offers a snapshot of where residents most often sought professional help.

For homeowners and renters, the basic advice remains straightforward: avoid leaving food or trash where rodents can easily reach it. Accessible waste can attract pests and create conditions that make a rodent problem worse.
