Former Attorney General Bill Barr has accused Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s hush-money case against former President Donald Trump as an “abomination.”
Barr also shared that despite past differences and concerns about a Trump second term, he plans on voting for Trump in the upcoming election.
Barr called Bragg’s case against Trump an “abomination” during an interview with Fox News on Wednesday. According to Barr, the case is politically driven, considering the charges come seven years after the alleged hush money was paid.
“It’s not only far-fetched, they’re trying to predicate it on a federal crime, which wasn’t prosecuted. And they’re wrong about it. This was not a campaign contribution. They’re just wrong on the law,” Barr stated.
As per Bragg’s alleged theory, then-Trump personal attorney Michael Cohen made a campaign contribution in excess of federal limits by paying porn star Stormy Daniels $130,000 as part of a nondisclosure agreement before the 2016 presidential election. However, according to Barr, this payment did not come from, nor was it intended for, Trump’s campaign.
The real issue, according to Barr, is the larger problem of the “excesses of the progressive left” and their attempts to “subvert our institutions.” He believes this dangerous agenda is the true threat to liberty and democracy in the United States.
When asked if he would support Trump in the upcoming presidential election, Barr responded, “Well, I’ve said all along, given two bad choices, I think it’s my duty to pick the person I think would do the least harm to the country, and in my mind, I will vote the Republican ticket. I will support the Republican ticket.”
In Barr’s opinion, the continued existence of the progressive left in the country could lead to “national suicide.” He believes the United States is playing “Russian roulette” with Trump in office, but that a continuation of the Biden administration would be far more dangerous for the country.
Numerous legal experts have also criticized Bragg’s case against Trump. George Washington University Law School professor Jonathan Turley described it as a “Frankenstein case” based on a resurfacing of alleged misdemeanor violations. Similarly, former federal prosecutor Andy McCarthy argued in a recent piece for National Review that Trump’s best defense is not to prove his innocence, but rather to show that any potential guilt on his part would only lead to a misdemeanor charge.
Barr believes that Bragg’s case against Trump is weak and politically motivated. He stands firmly on the side of supporting Trump in the election, believing that the real threat to the country lies in the progressive agenda.
My personal opinion about Barr is that I wouldn’t trust him further than I could throw him but I have no doubts he’s experiencing some buyer’s remorse over Biden. I just think it’s very telling that he’s backing Trump.
Biden doesn’t stand a chance. This is exactly why we’re watching these trials unfold in the first place (in my opinion).
