It’s no surprise that the Democratic-run border city of El Paso is declaring a state of emergency ahead of the end of a major Trump-era migrant expulsion order, known as Title 42. With the policy’s end expected to result in a significant increase in illegal immigration at the southern border, El Paso Mayor Oscar Leeser said the city needs to ensure it has the resources for shelters, housing and staffing to help address the surge of migrants.
But the Biden administration’s plans appear to fall short of addressing this worrying situation. DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and Secretary of State Antony Blinken jointly announced a plan to address an expected migration surge by creating new consequences for illegal crossings, expanding legal pathways to entry and creating migrant processing centers in Latin America. However, according to Leeser, migrants have already arrived to El Paso believing the “false” narrative that the border will be open after May 11.
The reality of the situation is that Biden’s broken border policies are causing chaos at the border and beyond. The lack of consequences for illegal immigration is encouraging more migrants to attempt to cross the border, creating an overwhelming burden for our border cities like El Paso. This is why El Paso declared a state of emergency – they need to prepare for an influx of migrants seeking to take advantage of Biden’s broken policies.
“We’re getting prepared now for what we call the unknown,” Leeser said. “And the unknown is what will happen after May 11.” What is certain, however, is that Biden’s broken border policies will only exacerbate the situation. As of Sunday, there are more than 4,000 migrants in the custody of U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP).
It’s clear that Biden’s broken border policies are the cause of this crisis. He needs to take action to secure our borders and enforce the laws that are already in place. Otherwise, border cities like El Paso will continue to struggle to address the influx of illegal immigrants. Without action, Biden’s broken policies will only lead to more chaos and uncertainty.
