Colorado Officer Killed, Three Wounded After Suspect Opens Fire
A police officer in Lakewood, Colorado, was killed and three others were wounded after a suspect opened fire during an encounter on a local bus, according to police. Officers returned fire and killed the suspect.
A bystander was also injured. Police said the extent of that person’s injuries was unknown.
The shooting happened near Denver on the evening of November 5, 2026. According to the Lakewood Police Department’s preliminary account, officers responded around 6:30 p.m. to a report of a suspicious person near West Colfax Avenue and Wadsworth Boulevard.
Police said a suspect from an earlier hit-and-run incident had been spotted boarding a northbound RTD bus. Officers made contact with the suspect on the bus. That was when the suspect began firing, the department said.
“Within seconds of agents approaching the suspect, the suspect opened fire on our agents,” Lakewood Police Public Information Officer John Romero said during a news conference.
All four officers were taken to local hospitals. The department initially described them as “suffering from serious to critical injuries,” before announcing that three were in stable condition and one had died.
The department did not release the names of the officers or the suspect in its statement.
In announcing the officer’s death, Lakewood police described a department and community grieving a loss in the line of duty.
“The Lakewood Police Department is devastated to announce that one of our agents has died as a result of their injuries. Words cannot express the profound sorrow our department and community feel tonight over the loss of our fallen hero, who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to Lakewood.”
The department also expressed support for the three surviving officers and their families as they begin recovering.
The First Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team will investigate the case, according to the police statement. The department said that review follows protocol.
Police thanked the first responders who rushed to help the wounded officers and community members. They also thanked residents for the support already shown to the department.
Several details remained unresolved in the initial announcement, including the bystander’s condition. Police said they would provide further updates after reviewing the large amount of incoming information.
The department stressed that its account was preliminary and subject to verification.
