Dan Sullivan Questions Mary Peltola Over What Appeared to Be Prepared Answers in Alaska Senate Debate

Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan confronted Democrat Mary Peltola during Thursday night’s “Debate for the State” in Anchorage after he appeared to notice her reading from prepared notes or answers.

The exchange quickly put the moderators on the spot. Sullivan questioned whether the candidates had received the questions before the debate, which was hosted with moderators from Alaska Public Media and Alaska’s News Source.

“We weren’t supposed to get these questions beforehand, were we?” Sullivan asked.

The moderator gave a firm denial: “Neither one of you got questions beforehand. Absolutely not.”

Sullivan did not drop the issue. He followed up by pointing directly at what he was seeing from his opponent.

“Okay, I’m just watching my opponent read from questions that seem to be answered,” Sullivan said.

Peltola offered a short response: “I’m prepared.”

The moment became one of the most notable exchanges of the debate. The moderator’s answer made clear that both candidates were denied advance access to the questions, while Sullivan continued to argue that Peltola’s responses appeared unusually prepared. The exchange did not establish that she had received the questions beforehand, but it immediately drew attention to the contrast between the two candidates on stage.

C-SPAN shared video of the exchange:

The debate unfolded in a Senate race already attracting national attention. Peltola, a former representative, lost her House seat to Republican Nick Begich in 2024 after briefly holding the position. She is now the national Democratic Party’s top recruit in its effort to flip Sullivan’s seat.

The contest is viewed as important to the battle for Senate control. President Trump made a rare campaign stop in Alaska just days before the debate to support Sullivan, adding even more national focus to the race.

The latest clash also follows a series of controversies surrounding Peltola’s campaign. The Gateway Pundit previously reported that her campaign descended into “complete chaos” after she abruptly fired multiple senior staffers shortly before the August primary. The campaign then turned to a Chicago firm tied to Obama adviser David Axelrod.

The outlet also reported on former acting DNI Ric Grenell calling Peltola a “hypocrite” after former aides accused her of using homophobic slurs, including toward gay staffers, along with other crude language. Those claims were presented as allegations from former aides.

The Gateway Pundit further covered a Democrat-linked effort to place a similarly named candidate on the ballot, in what was described as an apparent attempt to confuse voters and siphon support from Sullivan.

Against that backdrop, Sullivan’s question about prepared answers gave the Alaska debate a sharp and memorable moment. Peltola’s two-word reply, “I’m prepared,” is likely to remain one of the clearest lines from the contest.
