The investigation into the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump on July 13th is still ongoing, and the parents of the perpetrator, Thomas Matthew Crooks, have taken a major legal step by hiring a high-powered Pittsburgh-based law firm, Quinn Logue, to represent them. The Daily Mail reports that the firm specializes in criminal defense and civil suits, such as wrongful death and personal injury. This move comes as the FBI continues to probe what the parents may have known about their son’s plans.
According to an anonymous family member, who spoke to the Mail, the FBI is still uncertain about the level of knowledge the parents had about their son’s actions. The source states, “The FBI still very much has questions about how much they knew and how he [Thomas] slipped through the net.”
Since the shooting, Crooks’s parents have made no statements and have asked to be left alone when approached by the media. This lack of communication has sparked concern among some Republicans, who are questioning the pace of the investigation and the motive behind the shooting. Senator Chuck Grassley of Iowa said, “It’s been more than a month since former President Trump’s near-assassination, yet the FBI has still not offered Congress or the public any real insights into Crooks’ motivation.” He went on to say, “The FBI ought to stop dragging its feet and provide a serious update on their investigation.”
Another Republican senator, Ron Johnson of Wisconsin, who is part of the Senate panel investigating the shooting, expressed frustration with the lack of progress. He stated, “All I can really tell you is the Secret Service, FBI are basically dragging their feet. They’re stonewalling us.” Representative Mike Waltz of Florida also raised concerns about the investigation, stating, “I don’t understand, and I don’t have any answers yet to help me understand how the [Secret] Service and DHS came out so quickly and said – and I think the FBI as well, but I’ll have to check that – and said he operated alone.” He continued, “How do you know that mere days into your investigation? You can’t tell us his motive, but you could tell us he operated alone? You can’t get into these encrypted overseas accounts, but you can tell us he acted alone?”
The lack of information and progress in the investigation has led some to question the federal agencies’ claims that Crooks acted alone.
With no known motive and encrypted accounts on Crooks’s phone, skepticism remains about the lone wolf theory. It is unclear when the FBI will provide an update on their investigation, but for now, the American people are left in the dark as to what drove Crooks to attempt to assassinate the former president. The search for answers continues as the legal battle for Crooks’s parents begins.
