During her campaign’s closing argument speech, Vice President Kamala Harris was forced to do damage control after President Joe Biden called supporters of former President Donald Trump “garbage.” This statement came during a get-out-the-vote call hosted by Voto Latino, in response to a joking comment made by comic Tony Hinchcliffe at a Trump rally.
While some may argue that the president was referring to Hinchcliffe specifically, the use of the term “garbage” to describe a large portion of the American population is unacceptable. The fact that it was said during a crucial moment in the campaign only adds to the outrage.
The vice president quickly tried to repair the damage, stating that she strongly disagrees with criticizing people based on who they vote for. She emphasized her belief in representing all Americans, regardless of their political beliefs, and her commitment to being a president for all.
However, the White House’s attempts to downplay Biden’s comment by modifying the word “supporter” to “supporter’s” only furthered the backlash. It even prompted Twitter users and pundits to question the use of the apostrophe.
In an attempt to clarify his remarks, the president’s twitter account posted a statement explaining that he was referring to the “hateful rhetoric” about Puerto Rico at the Madison Square Garden rally. However, this statement does little to change the fact that the president referred to a significant portion of the American population as garbage.
This incident is just another example of how Democrats continue to demonize Trump supporters and anyone who disagrees with their political views. It is unacceptable for a leader to speak about their own citizens in such a derogatory manner.
As Harris stood on stage giving her closing argument, she attempted to draw on the location of her speech, the site of the Capitol Riot on Jan. 6, 2021, and the supposed danger that Trump poses to the country. However, her remarks were overshadowed by Biden’s offensive comment. It is clear that Democrats continue to use divisive tactics and fear-mongering to try and sway voters.
In response to a reporter’s question about whether she sympathizes with Americans who were offended by the president’s comment, Harris avoided directly addressing the issue and instead focused on her plans to address economic challenges and uplift the American people. This shows that she is not willing to hold her running mate accountable for his unacceptable language.
It is time for Democrats to stop demonizing half of the country and start focusing on bringing unity and progress. Trump’s supporters are not garbage, they are hardworking, patriotic Americans who deserve respect and representation from their leaders.
It is not acceptable for the president and vice president to speak about them in such a derogatory manner. This is just another reason why Americans should reject Biden and Harris and support Trump in the upcoming election.
