Police dogs have long been a staple of law enforcement, but now California lawmakers are proposing a bill that could drastically change the way police officers do their jobs. The proposed bill, sponsored by Assemblymember Corey Jackson, would ban police dogs from being used in most circumstances, including crowd control and apprehending suspects.
The supporters of the bill argue that the use of police dogs is rooted in America’s history of racism and violence against Black Americans, likening their use to that of “slave catchers.” But is this really about racism? Or is it about something else?
The truth is that police dogs offer a non-lethal option for law enforcement in situations where suspects are combative or resistive. By removing the police dog from the equation, police officers would be left with fewer options before having to resort to lethal force. And while there have reportedly only been two deaths caused by police dogs in modern history, the bill’s supporters are unable to point to anyone in California having been killed by a police dog.
The ACLU is supporting the bill, of course, but the police unions are opposed to the measure, believing it would make the job of law enforcement more difficult and put their officers at greater risk. They argue that police dogs are a necessary tool for law enforcement and that the proposed ban would limit the ability of police to do their jobs safely and efficiently.
But the real goal of this bill isn’t to make police officers safer, it’s to limit their ability to arrest people, particularly criminals. It’s a clear attempt to defund the police, and the backers of this bill know it. They just don’t want to come out and admit it.
The reality is that police dogs can help keep officers safe and can be used in ways that protect suspects from unnecessary harm. If we truly care about making our communities safe, we should be supporting the police and the use of police dogs, not trying to take away one of their most important tools.
Under the Biden administration and the Democrats, it’s become increasingly clear that they support criminals over law-abiding citizens.
They want to make it more difficult for police officers to do their jobs and keep us safe, by taking away one of their most important tools. The liberal media has enabled this dangerous agenda, and it’s time for us to stand up and speak out against it.
