Marine Veteran Fights Off Armed Teens in Maryland Carjacking

Marine Veteran Stops Armed Teenage Carjacking in Maryland

A Marine Corps veteran in Maryland is being credited with helping stop an attempted armed carjacking after surveillance video showed him fighting back against four hooded teenagers in Oxon Hill. The incident happened around 4:45 p.m. Tuesday while he was working on his truck, according to reporting shared by The New York Post.

The confrontation was caught on surveillance footage and later posted online by the victim, Jheyco Borda. In the video, Borda is standing near the back of his truck when four teenagers approach and close in around him. Police and the reporting indicate that one suspect, described as wearing a red, white and blue sweatshirt, pulled a handgun and demanded Borda’s truck keys and cellphone.

What could have been a fast robbery turned into a close-quarters struggle. Borda grabbed the armed suspect and fought for control of the gun. As the scene turned chaotic, two of the teens ran off down the street while another stayed near the truck.

Then Borda’s brother came out from a nearby home to help. During the struggle, a gunshot went off. No one was reported injured.

Working together, the brothers were able to gain control of the situation and hold the suspects until officers with the Prince George’s County Police Department arrived. Authorities took all four suspects into custody.

Borda said his military training helped him stay calm. "Once a Marine, always a Marine," Borda told Fox 5.

"It took me just one split second. We went to training for the Marines, and that came out right at the moment."

He also said he was grateful the situation did not get worse. Borda noted that his children were not in the truck, and neither was his dog Sky, who often rides with him. He said he was thankful no family members were hurt during the attempted carjacking.

The truck did take damage during the fight. Borda said the bullet passed through the bed of the vehicle and left repairs he estimates at about $2,000. He said his insurance will not cover the cost.

After the arrest, Borda said responsibility should not stop with the teens involved. He told Fox 5 that both the teenagers and their parents should be held accountable. He also posted a warning for others in the area, writing, "Be careful and be aware of your surroundings,"

The case comes as many Maryland and Washington-area residents continue to worry about carjackings and armed robberies. In this instance, police say the suspects ran into an armed victim who knew how to react and had help from a family member willing to jump in fast.
