On Friday night, the Supreme Court issued a full stay that allows the abortion pill mifepristone to remain on the market. CNN medical correspondent Elizabeth Cohen joined CNN This Morning Weekend to explain why this is a relief for doctors in states where abortion is allowed.
Cohen stated that mifepristone has an “excellent safety profile,” and that “millions of American women have used it,” citing a chart that showed that it is responsible for five deaths per one million users as compared to 20 and 49 deaths for penicillin and Viagra respectively. She concluded that mifepristone is “way, way less deadly” than Viagra.
Less deadly for whom? Certainly not for the baby.
What Cohen failed to acknowledge is that, for one million successful abortions, one million lives are lost. For one million successful abortions, one million babies never get to experience life outside the womb. One million successful abortions means one million deaths.
The discussion of mifepristone’s “excellent safety profile” and its relative safety compared to other drugs is nothing more than a smokescreen. What is ignored is the fact that abortion is a violent act that snuffs out the life of a baby.
The phrase “abortion is a right” suggests that it is a right to do whatever you want with your body, but it fails to recognize the baby as a living person. It fails to recognize that the baby has rights too.
The discussion of mifepristone’s safety profile distracts from the fact that abortion is a violent act that takes the life of an innocent baby. Liberals can talk all they want about mifepristone’s safety profile and its relative safety compared to other drugs, but until they acknowledge the baby as a life that deserves to be protected, their arguments will continue to be nothing more than a smokescreen.
