Mysterious Hero Rescues 2-Year-Old From Drowning After Car Crashes Into The Bay

The Maryland Patch Reported that a 2-year-old child strapped into a car seat was launched from a pickup truck into the Assawoman Bay shortly before 3 p.m. Sunday when the pickup was involved in a crash on the Route 90 Bridge. An unidentified “heroic witness” jumped from the bridge into the bay and rescued the child, who was flown to John Hopkins Hospital.

The Ocean City Fire Department said the “good Samaritan immediately jumped over the guardrail and into the bay.”

Ocean City police officers reported the pickup the toddler was in (seen in the photos below) was halfway over the guard rail following a horrific 5-car accident on the Route 90 bridge. Adding that from the 5 vehicles involved, at least 8 people were transferred to hospitals for treatment, including the 2-year-old.

Ocean City Fire Department shared photos of the horrific crash and the story of our hero on their Facebook page:

“At approximately 2:47 pm Ocean City Communications Center dispatched Ocean City Fire and Police units to the Route 90 bridge for a vehicle crash with injuries. A Worcester County Fire Marshal quickly arrived on the scene and informed communications one vehicle was half over the guardrail, and multiple patients were injured. A mass casualty incident was declared and the call was upgraded to a rescue response. During the collision, one pediatric patient was ejected from the car teetering over the guardrail and landed into the Assawoman Bay. A Good Samaritan immediately jumped over the guardrail and into the bay, rescuing the infant.

Firefighters secured the vehicle with rescue tools, while paramedics treated multiple priority patients. Seven patients were transported by ground to various hospitals while the pediatric patient was flown to John Hopkins Children’s Hospital.

Ocean City Police are currently investigating the cause of the accident, and Route 90 remains closed at Coastal Highway and 589.”

At this time, it is unclear what caused the serious accident. The condition of the infant and the seven other patients are also currently unknown.

The Ocean City Police Department is investigating the incident, according to People.
