The iconic Gettysburg Battlefield has been marred by acts of vandalism, as discovered by authorities from the National Park Service (NPS) on Wednesday. According to the park’s preservation staff, two separate incidents of vandalism have occurred, causing damage to the historical site.
The first incident, which took place on August 15th, involved multiple boulders located at Little Round Top being defaced with graffiti. This was followed by another incident on August 19th, when visitors reported graffiti being spray-painted on the War Department Observation Tower on Oak Ridge.
In response to the vandalism, the park’s preservation staff took immediate action to address the damage. By August 20th, all traces of the vandalism had been removed, thanks to the dedication and hard work of the park’s preservation team. In a statement, Park Superintendent Kristina Heister expressed her appreciation for their efforts.

“Our hearts sank when these two cases of vandalism were reported within days of each other,” said Heister. “We were fearful that the graffiti carved into the rock may be there for future generations. I’m so very thankful for our amazing preservation staff who expertly restored these sites quickly so visitors could continue to experience them as they were intended. They truly are the heroes of this hallowed ground.”
The Gettysburg Borough Police Department is also investigating other incidents of vandalism in the borough, including at Gettysburg College. Authorities are urging the community to be on the lookout for any suspicious activities and to report them immediately. Reports can be submitted through the Gettysburg Police Department’s website or by contacting the park directly.
This recent act of vandalism is a reminder of the ongoing efforts needed to preserve historical sites and the need for vigilance from both authorities and the community. The Gettysburg Battlefield holds significant historical and cultural importance, and it is disheartening to see it targeted by such senseless acts.
In light of this incident, the National Park Service is reminding the public to treat historical sites with respect and to refrain from any kind of vandalism or defacement. These acts not only damage the physical integrity of these sites, but they also diminish their value and significance to future generations.
The actions of the park’s preservation staff in quickly restoring the sites demonstrate their commitment to preserving and protecting the historical and cultural importance of the Gettysburg Battlefield. As we move forward, it is important for everyone to work together to ensure the continued preservation of this sacred site.
