Pediatric ICU Doctor Stabbed to Death in Bed as Children Slept; Suspect Was Out on Cashless Bail
Dr. Idris V.R. Evans, a respected pediatric critical-care doctor, was stabbed to death inside his Edgewood, Pennsylvania, home early Thursday morning. His two children were sleeping nearby when the attack happened.
Evans, 46, served as co-medical director of the Pediatric Critical Care Transport Team at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. He was also an assistant professor of critical care medicine at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.
His work focused on children in the most serious condition, including pediatric sepsis and critical-care transport. Colleagues described him as a dedicated physician who cared for children arriving at the hospital in the worst possible shape.
His life was cut short around 12:30 a.m. Thursday at the family’s home on Linden Avenue, KDKA reported. According to WPXI, citing Allegheny County police and court documents, 32-year-old Elijah Hemingway entered the house through a window and went to the third-floor bedroom.
Police say Hemingway attacked Evans and his wife with a kitchen knife as they slept. He was reportedly wearing only underwear and talked about “being God” during the assault.
Evans’ wife told investigators that the couple woke up during the attack. She yelled for their 8-year-old and 12-year-old children to get out of the house and run to a neighbor. The children escaped unharmed.
Evans died at the hospital. His wife remained in critical but stable condition.
Police described the bedroom as a “very violent scene,” with broken furniture and mirrors. Hemingway was later found hiding behind a nearby house with cuts on his hand.
He is charged with criminal homicide, attempted homicide, aggravated assault, burglary, and related counts. During interviews, Hemingway claimed Evans had invited him over hours earlier and that the couple attacked him first. Investigators said they found no evidence supporting that account.
Evans’ wife told police she did not know Hemingway. She said her husband addressed the man as “Elijah,” according to KDKA.
The suspect was already out of jail when the alleged attack occurred. Hemingway had been arrested in July 2026 on felony burglary and theft charges tied to a February incident at an ex-girlfriend’s home, where he allegedly took electronics.
His bail in that case was set at $0.00 and was non-monetary. That arrangement is also described as cashless bail or release on non-cash conditions. A preliminary hearing in that case was still pending.
Court records also show traffic offenses and disorderly conduct citations. Now, Hemingway faces homicide and other serious charges in a case that left a respected doctor dead, his wife seriously injured, and two children forced to flee their home in the middle of the night.
