Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi recently distorted the truth about her role leading up to the events of Jan. 6, 2021 at the US Capitol. Pelosi claimed she “begged” the Trump administration’s Defense Department to send the National Guard to the Capitol, but the full story reveals her own complicity in the lack of security that day. Pelosi’s version of events conveniently leaves out the fact that her own appointed House sergeant at arms declined requests for guard support days before the incident, citing bad optics. This paints a very different picture of Pelosi’s actions leading up to Jan. 6.
Pelosi recently stated, “Chuck Schumer and Mitch McConnell and I were begging the administration to send the National Guard” on Jan. 6. However, this is only half the story.
Former Capitol Police Chief Steven Sund and members of the Trump administration have testified that the offer of National Guard support was made days in advance of Jan. 6, but Pelosi’s own sergeant at arms denied the request, citing concerns about “optics.” These facts show that Pelosi’s efforts to deflect blame onto the Trump administration are simply a way to avoid accountability for her own actions.
According to an official timeline compiled by the Capitol Police, a Pentagon official reached out on Jan. 2, 2021 to ask if they wanted National Guard troops deployed for Jan. 6. The Capitol Police responded the next day declining the offer, presumably because Pelosi’s sergeant at arms had already turned down the request.
Trump’s former Chief of Staff Kash Patel has also affirmed that DOD support was refused by the House and Senate sergeant at arms who report directly to Pelosi. This evidence proves that Pelosi had ample opportunity to ensure the National Guard was present on Jan. 6, but she chose to ignore the offer.
During a speech in August 2022, Trump stated, “Had they not turned it down, you wouldn’t have had Jan. 6 as we know it.” This statement highlights how Pelosi’s actions directly contributed to the security failures of that day. Bowser also made a preemptive request on Jan. 5 for the National Guard not to be deployed unless approved by the Metropolitan Police Department, citing a similar incident in summer 2020. It is clear that Pelosi’s concerns about “optics” were always at the forefront of her decision-making, even if it put the safety of the Capitol at risk.
In a testimony to the Committee on House Administration in September 2023, Sund explained that he requested the assistance of the National Guard on Jan. 3, but was denied by the sergeants at arms who cited concerns about optics. Sund also revealed that he called Irving, Pelosi’s sergeant at arms, 11 times before finally receiving approval for the National Guard to be deployed. This delay shows that Pelosi was ultimately responsible for the absence of National Guard troops on Jan. 6, despite her attempts to shift the blame.
Unidentified stormtroopers. Unmarked cars. Kidnapping protesters and causing severe injuries in response to graffiti.
These are not the actions of a democratic republic.@DHSgov’s actions in Portland undermine its mission.
Trump & his stormtroopers must be stopped.

Sund believes he was never asked to publicly testify before the Jan. 6 committee, established by Pelosi, because lawmakers did not want her decision-making to be scrutinized.
This further highlights Pelosi’s efforts to protect her own image and deflect accountability. She also blocked Republican Reps. Jim Jordan and Jim Banks from serving on the committee, showing her clear bias and unwillingness to seek the truth. This painted a clear picture that the committee was more focused on politically damaging Trump than finding out the truth about what happened on Jan. 6.
As Americans across the country peacefully protest to demand an end to racial injustice and police brutality, we have seen a shocking deployment of various security officers from multiple jurisdictions to our nation’s capital. Pelosi’s claims of begging for National Guard support are a half-truth that conveniently ignores her own role in the security failures on Jan. 6. She was directly involved in denying requests for guard support days before the incident, and her continual focus on optics and deflecting blame only further underscores her unwillingness to take accountability.

The American people deserve to know the truth about what happened on Jan. 6, but Pelosi’s actions have prevented this from happening. It is time for her to take responsibility for her mistakes and put the safety of the Capitol above her own political agenda.
