Trump Blasts Supreme Court After Justices Block Missouri’s GOP-Favored Map for Third Time
President Donald Trump is taking aim at the Supreme Court after the justices blocked Missouri from using a new congressional map ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
The Supreme Court acted Friday evening, stopping the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals from allowing Missouri to use the new map. It was the third time the high court had blocked Missouri’s GOP-favored plan.
The map was passed last year by the Republican-controlled Missouri House of Representatives. The sweeping plan would reduce Democrat representation in the state’s congressional delegation to just one seat.
Missouri’s Supreme Court later threw out the new map. The state then took the fight to federal court, but the U.S. Supreme Court blocked the map twice before Friday’s action.
The legal dispute then shifted again. On Monday, the Eighth Circuit ruled that Missouri’s current plan, which uses the 2022 map for this year’s elections, violates the Constitution. That older map favored Democrats.
The appeals court said the 2025 map was the only plan that complied with the Constitution and federal law.
“This Court holds that Missouri’s current plan to use the 2022 map in the November 2026 general election violates the Constitution. Only use of the 2025 map complies with the Constitution and federal law. We affirm the district court and remand for entry of a permanent injunction,”
The three-judge panel included Judges Loken, appointed by George H. W. Bush, and David Stras and Justin D. Smith, both appointed by President Trump.
On Friday evening, the Supreme Court blocked the Eighth Circuit’s order. There was no dissent. The justices cited their previous concerns about changing a congressional map after voting had already begun.
Trump responded Sunday morning, accusing the Supreme Court of overruling judges who had reached what he called the correct decisions. He also thanked Missouri’s governor and residents who are fighting for what he described as fairness and election security.

Thank you to the Governor, and all of the Great People of Missouri, who are fighting so hard for Fairness and Election Security. Such tremendous Spirit and Love of our Country. The fight now centers on whether Missouri can use the 2025 map or must continue with the 2022 plan for the November 2026 general election. The Eighth Circuit said the newer map was constitutionally required, while the Supreme Court’s latest order blocked that ruling from taking effect.
Trump’s statement makes clear that he views the repeated court intervention as a serious setback for Missouri Republicans. He praised the state’s voters and officials while arguing that the new map represents both an election victory and a matter of election security.
