Trump demands DOJ probe after massive ballot blunder

Trump Pushes DOJ Probe After Maryland Ballot Error

President Trump is calling on the Justice Department to look into Maryland election officials after the state said a vendor mistake led to the mailing of hundreds of thousands of incorrect ballots.

The issue surfaced after Maryland officials announced they would send out replacement mail-in ballots for the state’s gubernatorial primary. According to the State Board of Elections, a problem with a vendor created the need for a second round of ballots. The state said the affected ballots would be replaced and the original batch would be sequestered and voided.

Election officials said the goal was to protect the integrity of the process and avoid confusion for voters. They also said the problem appeared to affect only ballots mailed before May 14, 2026. Voters who used web delivery, or print-at-home ballots, were not impacted. The state said affected voters would be notified directly.

Trump, however, seized on the error and framed it as a major problem. In a post on Truth Social, he said Maryland had sent out illegal mail-in ballots and suggested the original ballots had not been properly recovered. He also accused state leaders of allowing the mistake to happen.

Later, speaking to reporters, Trump said he had directed law enforcement to examine the issue. He argued that mail-in voting is vulnerable to fraud and said the Maryland situation should be reviewed carefully.

Maryland officials have said the original ballots will not be counted and that the replacement ballots are intended to restore confidence in the process. Still, the size of the error has drawn national attention, especially because it involved a large number of ballots ahead of a key election.

The episode has now become part election administration issue and part political fight. Democrats and Republicans have long clashed over mail-in voting, ballot security, and how election mistakes are handled. In this case, Maryland says the answer is a reset. Trump says it needs a federal investigation.

What happens next could depend on whether federal officials decide there is anything more than a serious vendor error. For now, Maryland is moving forward with replacement ballots, while the White House is putting pressure on the DOJ to take a closer look.
